We went to Sunderland to see the Deightons and had a lovely time. The weather was wonderful, the toddlers got on together (though it turns out that Alex is a complete tattletale) and the babies were very cute.

Well, yes, ok perhaps Stephanie does have one chin too many. But lets gloss over that and go "Ahhhhhhh, cutes!".

And I'd like to point out that I didn't pose them for this photo. Alex just thought that if Stephanie was lying down trying to eat her own toes that she would join her.

Why yes, I am obsessed with the dietary habits of the terrible two.

Today we ate fruit. All of us. Stephanie had pineapple. She even (terrifyingly) bit a little chunk off and chewed until it disappeared. Of course I don't know where it went. Into her tummy? Perhaps. Down the side of the high chair? More likely.

But that isn't big news. The big news is that Alex ate fruit. Alex! Amazing. And this was at her second dinner so she wasn't even particularly hungry. Alex choose some melon. And then had a second slice. She did dip some of into the tomato ketchup but we'll gloss over that tiny, unpleasant detail.

Food, food, food. It has all been about food here recently.

Alex is showing signs of beginning to be a bit more open to new food. Today I served up salmon for dinner and without being prompted she picked it up and took a big bite. She didn't actually eat it. That would have been too exciting. But even just taking a bite of something new is good news and to do so without prompting was even better news.

I sit next to Stephanie's high chair at meals and put the food I want her to eat on my plate. It was obvious very quickly that although she would eat just about anything what she really, really wanted to eat was my food. She has moved on. Now she hauls herself bolt upright using the edge of the high chair tray to see over to what Alex is eating. Now it doesn't matter what I'm eating. All she wants is Alex's dinner. Which should be fine except that tonight Alex was eating spaghetti. Stephanie can pick up and eat food herself but so far all she has attempted is baton and rice cake shaped food. Spaghetti was far beyond her motor skills. She was furious and refused to eat anything else while she was concentrating on the spaghetti.

Also I learned that it best to keep the baby fully dressed for mealtimes. Oh yes it is a bit unpleasant when the babygro is smeared from top to toe in porridge. But is so much easier to take a messy babygro off and throw it in the wash than it is to try to get a squirming porridgey baby clean.

Pizza toppings

Alex wants sprinkles (as in cake decoration) pizza.

I wonder if she would eat anything if it had sprinkles on it. Could be fun experimenting.

Why yes, that is the bubble blowing equivalent of the swiss army knife.
